J&R Sheffield Farm gears up for Christmas and reflects on highlights from 2025

Festive preparations are underway

Festive preparations are underway at J&R Sheffield Farm, where customers can once again order locally reared geese and turkeys for Christmas. Demand for geese continues to rise—what began with 200 geese has grown to more than 500 now, reflecting the appetite for high-quality, locally produced meat.

“Geese have really become a favourite,” said co-owner James Sheffield. “They’re rich, traditional, and people like knowing exactly where their food comes from.”

Simple Ways to Order

Orders can be placed directly through www.jandrsheffield.co.uk, or by calling 07989 309 815 to speak with James. The Sheffields encourage online orders, which help them keep things organised during their busiest time of year.

This season also brings some new options, including the “jigsaw turkey”—a turkey divided into wings, legs, and breast for easier cooking and storage. Still, whole birds remain in high demand. “We’ve actually seen more people ordering full turkeys this year,” said James. “It’s better value and means less waste.”

A Notable Year for the Family

It’s been a full year for the Sheffields both on and off the farm. James and his wife competed in Britain’s Fittest Farmer, organised by Farmers Weekly, with the final held at Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmer’s Dog. Mrs Sheffield took second place, presented by Clarkson himself.

“He’s outspoken but genuinely interested in farming,” she said. “We had a good chat about rearing poultry—he’s still learning, just like the rest of us.”

Focus on Care and Community

Although the farm’s geese and turkeys usually roam outdoors, the birds are currently being kept insid and we’re taking every step to keep them safe. They enjoyed a great summer and autumn before coming in.”

The family also continues their charitable tradition, raising more than £600 over the past five years for local causes. This Christmas, they’ll be supporting Crowdfunding for Good through JustGiving.

With thoughtful farming, careful preparation, and a strong sense of community, J&R Sheffield Farm remains a familiar name on Heathfield’s festive table.
