New owners at The Wheel – Sam and Harriet, baby Ola, Sam’s Parents and Dougie the dog.

It was a buzz of activity on Monday morning when I popped into The Wheel, in Burwash Weald, to have a chat with the new owner, Sam Maynard and his family. All of whom were busy working hard to get the pub ready for opening later this week. The inside of the pub is undergoing a face lift with lick of paint and change of colour, the garden seating area is getting a tidy and will soon boast a new kids’ playground by early May. Sam will be supervising the opening phase and then handing over to his team, some of whom, will be familiar faces to regulars of The Wheel in its earlier guise. Istvan Kis from Sam’s pub The White Hart in Wadhurst, will be moving across to head up the kitchen at The Wheel.

Sam talked me through all that the pub will offer and it sounded excellent.

” This week we are doing a soft opening on Wednesday and Thursday. We look forward to welcoming people from midday to 11pm for food and drink. Hopefully everything will work as it should, but, we hope customers will be understanding if there are a few glitches early on.  On Friday we close at 3pm, but reopen at 6pm for our official Launch Event; every one is welcome, there will be food from the menu to sample and our bar will be selling Harvey’s, Long Man, lager, quality wines and a collection of over 40 gins. Where possible local suppliers are used, the fish is from Newhaven and the vegetable supplier is from Burwash. There will be a great atmosphere and we can’t wait to meet everyone!” explained Sam.

The draft menu looked tempting, with pub classics, meat & fish from the grill, ambitious specials and vegetarian dishes – very much something for everyone. There are lots of great special offers like the Two Course Set Lunch for £10 (weekdays only), Thursday Steak night for two with a bottle of wine £35, and Sunday Roast for £12.50 (12s and under eat for FREE).  Sandwiches will be available 12 -4pm weekdays.

Anyone with special dietary requirements is asked to mention their needs at the time of booking, so that the chef can prepare them something off the menu if needs be.

The pub has a restaurant room, spacious bar with open fire/log burner and a large private room with its own bar, which can seat up to 30 and plenty of outdoor space and parking.
