The Star Inn, Waldron

The village of Waldron derives its name from the Saxon word Walda for woody ground and is surrounded by six different woodlands, all contributing to the area’s unique charm that earns it the title of High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This small village was once the proud owner of one of the three great round Saxon fonts still in existence in Sussex. However, one fateful day in the mid 1600s Oliver Cromwell’s troops decided to roll the font down a hill during a passing visit.

The font has since been restored to complete the stunning All Saints church that resides within this rural village. The church dates back to the 12th Century and is believed to be built on the site of an even earlier church. It is in a beautiful spot; its conservation-grade gravesite, sheltered by a grove of ancient yew trees, is at the top of a high ridge that overlooks a beautiful view. The village’s most recent claim to fame is through one of its former residents. It was briefly home to Gary Numan who is now considered one of the most influential musicians of the post-punk era.

Waldron is in an incredibly beautiful spot of East Sussex, it’s surrounded by lots of beautiful woodland, stunning landscapes and fascinating working farms and Medieval manors. Plenty to see for anyone that likes taking long hikes through picturesque countryside and, of course, a popular pub called The Star Inn.
