Heathfield man takes on the competitive world of dog sledding

In a country that falls apart the moment it snows, it’s a bit of a surprise to find a Gold Medal Champion ‘musher’ living in Heathfield.

Matt Hodgson has been racing Sleddogs for nearly 20 years. It all started with Alaskan Malamutes and then moved on to Canadian Eskimo Dogs, of which he still has two although they are retired from racing.

He currently races with a four dog team of Greenland Dogs (as the name implies these are Huskies from Arctic Greenland).  Which consist of a brother and sister pair who run in Lead called Lux and Ava and two of Ava’s pups Pride and Nimis in Wheel. A surprisingly family affair.

In 2023 he became GB’s first ever on Snow Sleddog World champion. Winning the 4 Dog 2 Class at the WSA world championship in Vermiglio Italy. He is now fundraising to ensure he can compete in just over two weeks at the largest Purebred Dryland World championships, which will take place in Germany, The WSA Dryland World Championships 2023

“We are desperate to be there to try to defend our title, unfortunately no sponsorship has been forthcoming so reluctantly I’m putting the begging bowl out as without help we simply can’t afford to go. Any help will be greatly appreciated,” explained Matt.
