Hundreds flock to fire station for carols and festive light illumination

Children and firefighters at Heathfield Fre StationSeveral hundred children, parents and community representatives turned up on Friday for carols, mince pies, mulled wine and the illumination of the town’s lights.

The choir was provided by Cross in Hand Primary School whose pupils donned Santa hats while singing traditional carols next to one of the fire engines.

Cllr Andy Wooley had the honour of switching on the Christmas lights just as darkness started to fall. He said: “It was my last public duty of the year and rounds off what has been a great year especially with all the 100 year commemoration events around the town.

“I was pleased to finish the year off by turning on the Christmas on the new high street and it’s fantastic to get our high street back for Christmas and see our town coming back to life.”

Crew Commander Tom Backhouse added: “It has become a tradition to host the Christmas carols at the fire station. This year we had a really good turnout as the weather was kinder than last year. On behalf of the town’s firefighters, I’d like to wish everyone a merry Christmas.”
