A new footpath has been created around the Playing Fields at Burwash Common, making the whole fields fully accessible in all weathers. The path was recently given a full testing by residents of Oakdown House, the residents, some of whom have mobility and learning disabilities tried the path out and gave it the thumbs up.

The charity that has responsibility for the fields, Burwash Weald and Common Memorial Fund Playing Field, was founded in 1957 as a memorial to those who fell in the Second World War with the specific aim of encouraging recreation and exercise. Whilst enjoyed by cricketers, footballers, stoolball teams, dog walkers, and many others, the field has been a no-go area for wheelchair users, families with buggies, and to anyone whenever it’s been raining.

The opening ceremony will be accompanied by Pudding and Royal Scarecrow Competitions, a free BBQ with all donations going to the Teenage Cancer Trust, the launch of a Community Art Project, various activities for children, and lighting of the Beacon with a community singalong.

The project was realised with a £22,500 grant from Rother District Council Community Fund, another of £10,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund, plus matching amounts from Community fundraising and groups, new drainage has been installed and a 500m all-weather path has been built by Coppards of Crowborough around the perimeter.
