Local government careers open doors for Wealden residents
Residents across Wealden are being encouraged to consider a career in local government as a national recruitment campaign shines a spotlight on the wide range of jobs available at Wealden District Council.
The Make a Difference, Work for Your Local Council campaign, funded by the UK Government, is running throughout January and February and aims to highlight just how rewarding and varied working for a council can be. For local people, it presents a chance to build a meaningful career while making a real difference close to home.
Working in local government offers far more than many people realise. From apprenticeships and graduate roles to specialist and senior positions, councils provide opportunities for people at every stage of their working life. Roles span more than 800 different job types nationally, covering everything from customer services and finance to planning, environmental health, housing and IT.
For Wealden residents, this means the chance to find secure, flexible employment without commuting long distances — while directly supporting local communities. Council roles also offer access to training and professional development, helping staff grow their skills and progress their careers over time.
Councillor Greg Collins, Alliance for Wealden (Green Party) and Lead Councillor for Finance, HR and Customer Services, said local government careers are often overlooked.
Not always the first place people look
“Local government isn’t always the first place people think of when choosing a career, but it should be,” he said. “At Wealden, we offer a wide range of opportunities, from apprenticeships and graduate roles to permanent positions across many different departments. The work is impactful, varied and full of opportunity, with plenty of scope to grow and develop.”
With hundreds of council roles available nationwide, the campaign is particularly keen to reach residents who may be looking for a career change, returning to work, or taking their first steps into employment.
