DESCRIPTION:\n\nIllumination is the art of applying gold to paper or vellum
 \, with the resulting artworks traditionally bound within manuscripts. Med
 ieval illuminated manuscripts were highly prized items created by teams of
  skilled artisans. Herbals were manuscripts detailing plants and their med
 icinal properties. They were a key part of the medieval manuscript traditi
 on and would aid the effective use of medicinal gardens like the one at He
 rstmonceux Castle.\n\nIn this one-day course\, you will learn how to handl
 e\, lay and polish 23.75ct gold leaf.  You will be guided through the pro
 cess of transferring an image onto paper and using ink and fine miniature 
 brushes to ‘ink over’ your design. We will also grind pigments as a gr
 oup to add colour and tone to our gilded herbals.\n\nWhat students should 
 bring\n\nAll tools and materials will be provided but do feel free to brin
 g miniature brushes if you have them at home\n\nA notebook for note-taking
 . An overview of the techniques learned on the course will be sent to you 
 afterwards.\n\nPlease wear clothing you don’t mind getting a little mess
 y.\n\nThis course is suitable for beginners and people with some experienc
 e.\n\nRefreshments\n\nPlease bring a packed lunch along.  Tea and Coffee 
 will be available at the class.\n\nTutor Biography\n\nSarah Davis is a mul
 timedia artist using traditional approaches with a deep historical resonan
 ce\, such as wood carving\, wax modelling and illumination. Within her own
  practice\, she uses these techniques to explore the cyclical nature of il
 lness and the complex dynamics of our internal bodily processes. In 2012\,
  Sarah graduated from Chelsea College of Art with a BA in Fine Art. She re
 turned to education in 2015 to study woodcarving and gilding at the City &
 amp\; Guilds of London Art School\, where she now teaches on the BA in woo
 dcarving. Since 2020\, she has been practising the endangered art of illum
 ination and teaches widely on the subject.--\n\nSaturday\, 28th March from
