Cross in Hand
Cross In Hand has been in possession of an old post windmill named ‘The New Mill’ since 1868, however it was in fact built in Framfield in 1855 and moved to Cross in Hand within the year. It was then relocated a second time on the orders of Squire Hurth as he took issue at it being so close to his mansion. This is believed to be due to a wish to mask the unseemly occurrences that frequently took place in his mansion. The mill was moved at great effort by being lifted on to rollers and pulled the quarter of a mile by a team of oxen.
The earliest reference to the village is in Latin from 1547 and it is believed that the name derives from the legend that the crusaders assembled there before then sailing for the Holy Land to fight Saladin. Cross In Hand also featured its very own stock car circuit which first opened for racing in 1965.
There are some lovely nearby attractions for anyone who enjoys spending time with nature. Possingworth Park and Selwyns Wood Nature Reserve all offer great opportunities for getting out and about in nature. There is also Cross in Hand Tennis Club in the village and Isenhurst Health Club.
