Discover why joining a silver band might be just what you need
You may think that a Band is made up of dedicated musicians who have played instruments their whole lives, but at Heathfield Silver Band this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Band member Peter’s story
Peter is one of two tuba players in the band, playing Eb Bass, but this isn’t where he started. As a child, Peter started on the Tenor Horn in the Salvation Army (where both his sisters still play), following in the footsteps of his father. At school he played Euphonium, and he even had a short spell playing the trumpet! He was a member of the county orchestra for a while and became a chorister and bell ringer at his local church. This proved a nice little earner in the summer when there were up to six weddings a day!
After a committed start, Peter stopped playing at the age of 17 to pursue other interests and didn’t pick up a brass instrument for many years! When Peter’s daughter Georgina, started to lose interest in her trumpet lessons at school, Peter had a cunning plan. He encouraged her to join a brass band, but the only way he could get her there was if he went too. Within three days, he was a member of two brass bands and has remained so ever since!
Peter has a very busy life; he manages his farm and spends time travelling nationally and internationally running his business manufacturing and supplying steering systems amongst other things to an increasingly large range of inland, coastal, sea-going and amphibious boats! The lambing season is an annual challenge but amidst all this activity, Peter remains committed to Heathfield Silver Band and he finds time not only to play in rehearsals and concerts but is the Chairman too!
