Getting around Heathfield made easy with Cuckmere Buses
If you live in or around Heathfield, you’ve probably seen the cheerful green and yellow minibuses of Cuckmere Buses out and about. What you might not know is that this long-running service has been part of Sussex life since 1976 — started by local people who simply wanted to make sure everyone in their community could get where they needed to go.
Back then, many larger bus companies had pulled out of rural routes because they weren’t profitable, leaving villages with no public transport. A group of determined residents, backed by East Sussex County Council and local WI branches, stepped up to fill the gap. With one small minibus and a rota of volunteer drivers, they began offering trips to shops, doctors, and hospitals for those without other options.
Nearly fifty years later, that same community spirit still drives the service. Cuckmere Buses has grown from a single route into a charity running more than 20 scheduled services across East Sussex — including regular connections for Heathfield. It’s now the oldest community bus service in the country, and it continues to run thanks to local volunteers who give their time freely to keep people connected.
Buses serving Heathfield
If you’re in Heathfield, you’ve got two community bus services to choose from every Wednesday:
- Service 195 – starts in Waldron, runs through Heathfield, then on to Rushlake Green, Bodle Street Green, Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne.
- Service 196 – begins at Rushlake Green, goes via Herstmonceux, then also heads to Pevensey Bay and Eastbourne.
Both routes are perfect for shopping, medical appointments, or a day by the sea. Fares are the same as the main bus operators, and concession cards are welcome.
Run by local people, for local people
Cuckmere Buses is a registered charity, powered by volunteers — 45 trained drivers and a board of directors who all give their time freely. Local town and parish councils also lend a hand with small annual grants, helping to keep services running smoothly. It’s a genuine team effort that shows what can happen when neighbours look out for one another.
Modern, comfortable and reliable
The fleet includes eight modern 16-seater minibuses, all fully maintained and easy to board. Each driver holds a D1 licence and completes full training, with ongoing assessments and support to make sure every passenger feels safe and welcome.
Fancy joining the team?
If you’ve got a D1 licence and a bit of spare time, Cuckmere Buses would love to hear from you. Driving for the service is a simple, rewarding way to give back and make a difference for people across Heathfield and the surrounding villages.
