Heathfield Community College Raises Over £4,000 in Rain-Soaked Sponsored Walk and Run

The spirit of Heathfield shone through the drizzle earlier this month as students, teachers, and staff from Heathfield Community College laced up for their annual Sponsored Walk and Run on October 3rd. Despite the rain, the turnout was strong and the mood even stronger — a real reflection of the community’s resilience and warmth.

A Scenic Route, Come Rain or Shine

This year’s 3.6km route wound through the picturesque Heathfield Park, kindly opened to the college by its owners for the event. Though the weather tested everyone’s resolve, runners and walkers alike pressed on, many smiling as they passed through tree-lined trails and spotted wildlife along the way.

Radio Heathfield kept spirits high with a lively playlist at the start and finish lines, while Sixth Formers and Sports Prefects volunteered to guide participants and cheer them on.

Among the standout performances, Year 9 student Toby Jaquet claimed the fastest time, completing the course in just 14 minutes and 6 seconds — an impressive run by any measure.

Supporting Mind and Student Well-being

The Sponsored Walk and Run wasn’t just about fitness; it was about raising awareness and funds for mental health. The community’s efforts brought in over £4,000, with donations still coming in. The funds will support both Mind, the national mental health charity, and the college’s own student well-being services.

Ms. Chloe Surrage, the College’s Wellbeing Manager, praised the event’s blend of “fresh air, exercise, and compassion,” calling it a reminder that caring for mental health often starts with simple, shared experiences like this.

“A Highlight of the Year”

Teachers echoed the pride felt across the school.
Mr. Thomas, Head of PE, described the event as “a highlight of the year,” celebrating how students encouraged one another despite the weather.
Ms. Elin Dupasquier, Assistant Headteacher, commended their “wonderful resilience.”
And for Mr. Jack Richardson, Head of Year 7, it was especially rewarding to see so many new students run the full distance with enthusiasm.

Continuing the Momentum

The college community now looks ahead to the positive impact the funds will have on local and national well-being initiatives. Donations are still open, and the school has encouraged anyone who hasn’t yet contributed to get involved.

The day may have been grey, but the spirit of Heathfield was anything but. The Sponsored Walk and Run once again proved that when the town comes together, rain is no match for community strength.
