Heathfield students celebrate Duke of Edinburgh Award success

20th February

On Tuesday 6 February, Heathfield Community College celebrated the success of last year’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh cohort with the presentation of Final Bronze Award certificates and lapel badges.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award gives students a challenge, encourages independence, develops teamwork, helps those in the community and in essence allows them to develop skills which then let them stand out when they apply for college, university or jobs in the future.

Certificates and lapel badges were presented to the following Year 10 students for completing the DofE Bronze Award: Jasmine Batson, Lydia Smith, Esme White, Maezie Lane, Emily Smith, Isla Howlett, Liv Crane, Anna Hersey- Swan and Amelia Lorrimore. Section certificates were also awarded to Sophie Marsh, Lauren Harris, Katie Walters and Isabel Fletcher who are all aiming to complete the award in the coming weeks.

The students demonstrated and developed confidence and independence by going in to the community to volunteer; learning new skills; and building physical fitness in completing the three DofE individual sections.

The students involved described the experience as; ‘The best thing I have done with school’ and ‘An experience of a lifetime that I will never forget.’ They also went on to say, ‘It’s really fun, you try new experiences and have new opportunities’, ‘I can’t wait for Silver!’.

Heathfield Community College commented: ” We are proud that after the success of last year, many of these students are now going on to complete the Silver DofE Award and a further 21 Heathfield students have signed up to complete the Bronze DofE Award this year. We are very grateful for all the help we have received, as none of this would have been possible without the support of the local community in raising funds for the DofE Award by placing tokens in the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme and Waitrose Community Matters Scheme. The funding received from both schemes helped to buy expedition equipment such as tents and will also go towards training staff to be Lowland Expedition Leaders which the College Bronze & Silver Award students will be able to make use of later this year.”
