A new community initiative ‘Scrap to the Future’ launches in Heathfield
17th April

‘Scrap To The Future’ comes to Heathfield
A few months ago, some like-minded individuals gathered to share ideas with a desire to encourage sustainability, reduce waste and provide a way to engage the community. They held a few meetings hoping to set up a Scrapstore to collect and sell unwanted materials that could be used to create arts and crafts.
“A few months down the line and it was obvious a venue would be hard to come by that would allow us to collect and store donated material, as well as to hold events and meetings for the community. A mini event to gauge interest and support seemed to be a good starting point, ” explained Susie from Scrap to the Future.
The Union hall offers to host the event
The Union church hall very kindly offered the group use of the hall free of charge and a launch date was finally agreed upon. The WI even decided to get on board to provide much needed refreshments.
So on Saturday 12th April (and despite competition from the amazing weather), they had 60 “scraptivists” join their event. It was a really buzzy morning with all ages attending and creating items to take home and continue on. There was pompom making with Lucy, rag-rugging with Claire, bird collages with Susie and knitting/crochet with Ann. These crafts are fabulously non-screen based activities, passing down skills that encourage chat around the table and save scrap materials from landfill too.
There was also some information on a stall to discuss sustainability locally with the idea that a hub is needed to bring the community together on these issues. They were also delighted to have visible support from local councillor Anne, as well as representation from the Crowborough Scrapstore. Heathfield, like other nearby towns has a high street that is struggling to entice visitors, and the more events the better it will be for all.
“Our aim is to form a loose collective and apply for some funding to help put on more events within our community. If anyone is keen to get involved we are starting monthly meetings again soon. And please, if anyone has an empty space and would like to have it filled with some dynamic creative crafters, please do get in touch,” Susie concluded.
