Tucked away in Hellingly – The Sussex Cutting Garden

In the first of our series of ‘Hidden Gems’ we have visited the Sussex Cutting Garden.

They can be found at the Granary Rural Business Centre, at Broad Farm, Hellingly,East Sussex, BN27 4DU just off the A267 on the right before the Lower Dicker turn off, if you are coming from Horam.

As a trained florist myself, I am always interested in visiting producers, and with the current vogue for DIY rustic, vintage, informal style weddings I can see that the Sussex Cutting Garden is bang on trend. They offer traditional event floristry services for celebrations like weddings and tributes for remembrance, and supply other florists with flowers, plus they are are open to private customers by appointment.

The Sussex Cutting Garden  produce a range of ‘wild’ homegrown flowers which are grown in a paddock on an arable farm close to picturesque Hellingly in East Sussex, and grow a wide range of traditional cottage garden flowers such as sweet peas, lavender, English roses, dahlias and a selection of spring bulbs for early season colour.

Their flowers offer something fresh and unique to the professional or amateur.

“These lovely flowers are often not available through florists and supermarkets, many of whom have to import the bulk of their stock, since they often don’t travel well or simply aren’t grown on a large scale.  We can therefore produce arrangements that are very individual, with a ‘fresh from the garden’ look. An added bonus is the wonderful fragrance that many of our flowers and herbs have.” Kate, co-owner, Sussex Cutting Garden.

They also run open days and workshops, the next will be on Saturday 25th August from 10am til 1pm.  A Dahlia Special!

 

Lots of helpful advice and tips on growing these lovely flowers, including looking at varieties to grow.
A tour around the cutting garden, discussing how and what to cut, conditioning, and storage.
Then you will cut a bucket of our seasonal stems, and we will guide you through arranging them as a hand-tie to take home.

Cost £40 per person – incl refreshments and homemade cake, and your flowers to take home.
