Farrago womenswear comes of age
18th May
Coming of age can be a celebration of maturity, a rite of passage, even a milestone. But in Farrago’s case it’s a time to look forward after having had to spend much of the past year unable to open its doors. Farrago is a well established womenswear shop, and it has occupied the same site in Heathfield from the time of its opening in 2002. Since the inception as a family business with the original shop in Battle, Lou Wright the owner has developed a distinctive identity for the business and her sister has even relocated to Australia and opened a Farrago boutique there.
“I like to think of my style as relaxed and accesible. Home grown brands are a staple of my buying and increasingly I am able to buy some great ethical and sustainable fashion from brands like White Stuff, Pretty Vacant, Mudd and Water, Mistral and Nomads. ” explained Lou Wright, owner of Farrago.
Not just about fashion
Farrago is bursting with goodies. Not just desirable clothing but also accessories, homewares and gifts from companies like the Sussex Handmade Soap Company, Somerset Toiletry Company and Neals Yard Remedies. One section is dedicated to home fragrance – candles and diffusers and another to soaps and tempting bath treats. Definitely a place to indulge in ‘me time’ or shop for a present for a loved one.
Looking forward to Summer and maybe some time away
Blue is dominant in many collections this Spring/Summer and Farrago is definitely following this trend, but there is more, explained Lou:
“We all wish we had had a Spring like last year, with those endless blue skys and balmy temperatures. But with faith in May turning warmer we are dreaming of Spring Summer linens and a palette of turquoise, aqua, teal and eau de nil with a splash of florals and the introduction of some brighter roses, orange and terracotta. You will find all of this and more in Farrago, alongside the ever popular whites and pretty florals”.
The lifeblood of Heathfield is the plethora of independent shops and boutiques in the High Street. The pandemic has thrown up a host of challenges for many retaillers. But, Lou still has a smile on her face as she describes:
“How the government support has been invaluable and although forced to shut after Christmas, just being able to get the Christmas takings in really helped. But what I really missed was the face to face with my customers, the chatting to people. Since we reopened it has been lovely to catch up with some familiar faces. There is no replacement for feeling the fabrics and trying a garment on. I think people really appreciate being able to come in and I certainly love seeing them.
Perhaps the youthful Farrago was in line with its dictionary definition of a ‘confused mixture’, however a visit to the shop now will confirm more of a ‘considered collection’ for this grown up shop!
