Cross in Hand wins against The Green and Seaford

Cross in Hand Ladies first team had a convincing win over St Leonard’s The Green on Sunday without dropping a set.

The match was played at home on Cross in Hand’s artificial clay courts in cold but bright, sunny conditions. The win takes the Cross in Hand team to the top of Division 2.

First pair and county players Tania Spooner and Suzi Christie beat the experienced second pairing 6-0, 6-2 and went on to beat the first pair 6-3, 6-0.

Cross in Hand’s second pair Andrea Law and Tracey Boorman beat The Green’s first pair in straight sets  6-0, 6-1 before taking on the second pair and winning 6-1, 6-3.

After the match team captain Anne Horsfall-Turner said: “The Green has some very good players so it was an excellent win for the club with some brilliant attacking play combined with consistency from the back and some great net play.”

The men’s first team had their last match of the Winter season vs Seaford’s second team. Cross in Hand won 4-0 to lift the team to third place and secure their place in Division 5. Players were Martin Stringell, Mikey Turek, Dan Watt and James Smith.

This Saturday will see Cross in Hand’s Wealden Mixed first team compete against The Green at home. The match starts at 12.30.

Cross in Hand Tennis Club is one of the leading tennis venues in the area.  With members ranging from toddlers to players in their 80s, the club offers first-class facilities which include five clay courts, three of which were resurfaced with Lano Grand in July 2020. The clay courts allow tennis to be played year-round and floodlights extend the playing time on winter evenings. There is also a singles hard court which is ideal for junior play.

Cross in Hand Tennis Club hosts many activities including social club sessions, singles and doubles ladders and an annual club tournament. There are also several men’s, ladies’, mixed and junior teams which compete against other clubs across Sussex and Kent.  Regular social activities take place in the clubhouse which is equipped with a bar, changing rooms and a shower room.

Players range from county standard to beginners and there are sessions available to suit any standard, including coaching from Nick Andrews and the excellent Elevate Tennis Coaching team. New members are welcome.
