More shop closures and how ‘staying at home’ will impact on your life

24th March

Last night’s announcement has extended the shops and services that need to stay closed. While it is clear that food shops, chemists and essential services can continue, there are plenty of grey areas. We will attempt to clarify some but be aware that this is an ever changing situation.

All but essential shops and services are asked to shut with immediate effect. Those who stay open need to follow these rules:

  • Ensure a distance of two meters between customers and shop assistants
  • Only let small groups of customers in at any one time
  • Use queue control outside of shops and other services still allowed to operate

The following must remain closed – Restaurants, cafes and workplace canteens, pubs, bars, nightclubs, members clubs and hotel bars, hair, beauty, nail salons, piercing and tattoo parlours, massage parlours, all retail apart from exceptions (see below). Outdoor and Indoor markets, auction houses, car showrooms, hotels, hostels,BnBs, campsites, and commercial boarding houses, caravan sites for commercial use, libraries, community centres, youth centres, places of worship, cinemas, theatres and concert halls, museums, galleries, bingo halls, casinos, betting shops, spas, skating rinks, fitness studios, gyms, swimming pools, leisure centres, arcades, bowling alleys, soft play, enclosed spaces in parks, sports courts and pitches, and outdoor gyms.

Exceptions: Food delivery and takeaway can continue to operate, cafes and canteens at hospitals, carehomes, schools, prison, miltary and services being provided to the homeless. Shops & services that can remain open: Supermarkets, food shops, health shops, pharmacies, petrol stations, bicycle shops, home and hardware shops, launderettes and drycleaners, garages, car rentals, pet shops, corner shops, newsagents, post offices and banks. Market stalls that offer food and grocery, temporary accomodation in hotels and hostels, key workers can continue to stay in hotels if required. Permanent residents in caravan parks can continus as can those who are housed while their primary residence is not habitable. Community centres can remain open if hosting essential voluntary such as food banks or homeless services. Funerals are permitted so long as distancing is observed, places of worship can permit solitary prayer, live streaming of a service with audience is permitted.

Doctors and Dentists

Most people are aware of the current practices being observed by doctors – telephone triage and advance ordering of prescriptions. We are awaiting information about dental emergencies, as dentists will only see emergency cases and are not able to offer invasive treatment. We understand that emergency dental clinics will be set up, and as soon as we have more information we will let you know.

Vets we spoke to are operating as normal within government guidelines. Please ring ahead and make an appointment.

There are many grey areas like gardeners, domestic staff, nannies if and when we get updates we will share.

Staying at Home

In a nutshell this means people of all ages staying at home and only associating with your own household. This is to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. Exercise outdoors following distancing rules and with your own household once a day. Travel should only be essential and for food, medical or emergency reasons. Those working in essential jobs are still permitted to travel to their place of work. This may change and we will communicate any updates.
