New State-of-the-Art Gym Coming to Heathfield High Street
A new era of health and vitality is set to begin for Heathfield residents with the exciting announcement of a new gym development at 14-18 High Street, previously the location of The Original Factory Shop. The new fitness facility, which is set to become the only gym directly on the High Street, has been given the green light by Wealden District Council (WDC).
No need for planning permission to be granted
The decision, made on November 28, 2025, confirmed that the proposed use of the premises falls within the existing Class E – Subset (d) for indoor sport, recreation, or fitness, meaning that specific planning permission is not required for the change of use. It is understood that the current landlord is chosing to end the current lease in favour of Mr Gayle’s Gym. The Original Factory Shop chain have been undergoing a restructuring which has seen closures in an attempt to keep the chain going.
This new development is being seen as a potential benefit for the Heathfield community. Having a centrally located, accessible gym within easy walking distance for many residents is expected to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the reliance on car travel to facilities further afield.
Gym owner cites health benefits and increase in High Street footfall
“We believe this addition will greatly enhance the wellbeing of local residents and contribute positively to the vitality of the High Street,” said a representative for the new gym development. “It will offer an accessible, inclusive space for people of all ages to stay active and connected within the community.”
In addition to the obvious health benefits, the new gym is hoped to increase footfall for nearby businesses, supporting the local economy and injecting new life into the town centre.
Residents can look forward to a modern fitness space designed for everyone, further cementing Heathfield High Street as a hub for community activity and local services. More details regarding the gym’s opening date and facilities are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
