Support for Heathfield High Street businesses

Independent shops and customer-facing businesses along Heathfield High Street are being offered a helping hand this year, thanks to a new fully funded business support programme bringing expert advice directly to local doors.

The scheme is being delivered by The High Street Experts, who are visiting businesses across Wealden to get a real understanding of the day-to-day challenges they face. The programme has been commissioned by East Sussex Growth Hub, working in partnership with Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council.

With more than 35 years of independent retail and small business experience – and still running their own businesses – The High Street Experts understand the realities of juggling customers, stock, staffing and marketing, often with very little spare time or budget.

The aim of the initiative is to help Heathfield businesses step back, refocus and build stronger, more resilient operations during 2026, while supporting the long-term vitality of local high streets, villages and market towns.

Rather than generic advice, support is practical and tailored, focusing on what will make the biggest difference right now. This includes:

• attracting and retaining customers
• planning ahead with confidence
• improving online presence and social media without it taking over the day
• creating simple, on-brand graphics
• making shop windows more eye-catching
• setting realistic, achievable goals

Councillor James Partridge, leader of the council, said:

“Everyone wants our high streets to be the busy heart of our towns. Our retailers and hospitality businesses are having to adapt to a changing world and often don’t have the time and money to get advice. So, we have arranged for The High Street Experts to offer them bespoke support, advice and practical help so that they can go on thriving and bringing us variety and choice.”

Independent retailers, cafés, hospitality venues and other customer-facing businesses in Heathfield are encouraged to take part. One local retailer who has already received support said:
