Burwash Weald
Sitting just two miles from Burwash is Burwash Weald, a small village which served for a long time as a service area on one of the main routes between the south east, south and south west of the country. This was briefly disrupted in the 1830s when Burwash Weald was plagued with smuggler gangs and criminals. Even people as far away as Portsmouth reported the local inn, The Wheel, to be the roughest public house they had ever been in. The inn sign for The Wheel depicts the Catherine Wheel which features on the coat of arms belonging to the 11th Century Knights of St Catherine of Sinai.
At the bottom of Dudwell valley is the remnants of an old forge which was used to craft implements from pig iron in the late 1500s. The forge finally ceased production in the early 1800s. This rural village is surrounded by lots of beautiful countryside for nature-lovers to explore.
